The gap between knowing and doing
This month, I want to dive into something that’s been on my mind a lot lately. We all know that living well—truly thriving—isn’t just about knowing what it takes to be healthy, happy, and whole. It’s about actually doing the things that bring us wellness. And man, there’s a huge difference between the two.
The Academic Understanding of Wellness
In our quest for wellness, many of us start by reading books, taking courses, or listening to podcasts. We immerse ourselves in knowledge about nutrition, exercise, mental health, and self-care. We learn about the importance of mindfulness, the benefits of a balanced diet, and the power of a positive mindset. We become experts in theory, knowing exactly what steps to take to lead a well-balanced life.
But here’s the thing—understanding wellness on an academic level is only half the battle.
The Real Challenge: Putting Tools Into Action
Let me tell you a story. I used to be someone who thought I was prioritizing wellness. I would go to the spa, workout here and there, and think a lot about the foods I should be eating, so much so that I would end up shaming myself without even realizing it. I was struggling. Why? Because all that knowledge stayed locked up in my head.
Knowing what to do and actually doing it are two entirely different things. We can read all the self-help books in the world, but until we start putting those tools into action, we won’t see the change we crave.
Bridging the Gap
So, how do we bridge that gap between knowing and doing? Here are a few steps that have worked for me and countless others:
1. Start Small: You don’t have to overhaul your entire life overnight. Pick one small habit to focus on. Maybe it’s drinking more water or going for a 10-minute walk each day. Start there.
2. Create a Routine: Consistency is key. Find a way to incorporate wellness practices into your daily routine. Set reminders, make a schedule, and stick to it.
3. Find Accountability: Share your goals with a friend, join a community, or hire a coach. Having someone to keep you accountable makes a huge difference.
4. Celebrate Progress: Don’t wait until you’ve reached your ultimate goal to celebrate. Acknowledge and celebrate the small victories along the way. 5. Be Kind to Yourself: This journey isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress. Be gentle with yourself, and remember that every step forward is a step in the right direction.
The Power of Action
Remember, the power isn’t in knowing what to do—it’s in actually doing it. When you start to put those wellness tools into action, you’ll notice a shift. You’ll feel more energized, more positive, and more in control of your life.
So, what’s one thing you can do today to start bridging that gap? Pick one small action and commit to it. You’ve got this, and I’m here cheering you on every step of the way.
Keep pushing forward, and remember—your wellness journey is just that, a journey. Embrace it, live it, and let’s thrive together.
Stay fabulous,
